Remote Plex Optimization Guide

To get the highest quality playback and prevent unnecessary buffering when streaming from outside the home network, you need to adjust the settings directly inside your Plex app. By default, many Plex clients limit remote streaming quality. Follow the steps below on your device to unlock the best experience.

  1. Open Settings: Launch the Plex app on your device, select your profile icon, and navigate to the Settings menu.
  2. Adjust Video Quality: Look for the Quality or Video Quality submenu.
  3. Enable Maximum Remote Quality: Locate the Remote Streaming (or Internet Streaming) option and change it from the default limit to Maximum or Original.
  4. Match Resolution: If your client has an option for Limit cellular data or a specific resolution cap, disable it or set it to the highest available option to prevent automatic downscaling.
  5. Allow Direct Play: Ensure that Direct Play and Direct Stream are toggled On or enabled under the advanced video settings. This allows your device to play the video files in their native format without requesting conversion.
